The guest house is located amongst several Victorian villas on Mayfield Road and feels almost suburban. Take a walk around nearby Holyrood Park or visit nearby restaurants Edinburgh Food Studio and Aizle.

It's only a 15-minute walk to the Old Town, with regular buses to the city centre and beyond.

By car: around an hour from Glasgow, 2 hours 45 minutes from Newcastle and 4 hours from Manchester. On-site parking costs £5 per day.

By train: Glasgow Queens Street to Edinburgh Waverley takes around 50 minutes, it's 3 hours from Manchester Piccadilly and 4 hours 45 minutes from London Kings Cross - after which, it's less than a 10-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Edinburgh.

There's a Victorian theme, with stained glass windows, open fires and antique furniture giving a cosy and relaxed feel. There's a beautiful lounge that encourages you to linger amongst its period charm.

Staff are extremely helpful and can arrange city tours, as well as recommend restaurants or things to do. There's an honesty bar, garden and on-site parking. The Club Room has wing chairs, books and a selection of CDs.

The period feel continues upstairs in the bedrooms, where beds are four poster or half tester and furniture is equally on theme. The bathrooms are more modern, and are equipped with rainfall showers.

Breakfast is made from the best Scottish ingredients, including produce grown in the guest house's garden. We recommend the steamed porridge, served with brown sugar, butter, whisky and flambéed fruit. Or there's a full Scottish Breakfast with homemade clootie dumplings, and a delicious daily special.
