Style
Once a hunting lodge, this Grade II-listed home of Charles Darwin's geologist friend, Charles Lyell, exudes sophisticated charm. The atmosphere is laid-back, complemented by intriguing Lyell memorabilia adorning the walls. The impressive panelled gallery lounge, featuring Chesterfield sofas and a brick fireplace, along with the elegant orangery providing enchanting views of the gardens, contribute to the overall allure.
Service & Facilities
Amenities include an indoor heated pool, an outdoor terrace ideal for drinks, a lounge furnished with plush sofas for relaxation and expansive grounds for the younger ones to enjoy playtime; there's something for everyone. Despite a less-than-promising start with an uncooperative barman, the dining experience took a positive turn during dinner, thanks to the amiable waitstaff.

Restaurants & Bars
Largely sourced locally, the food here is seriously good: think seared scallops zinging with pickled apple, fennel and vanilla foam, plus pan-fried sea bass and roast monkfish. The cooked breakfast excels with quality bacon, whilst a deconstructed Hob Nob dessert, which comprised mini cinnamon meringues, toffee popcorn, kirsch foam and mandarin sorbet, was top-notch.
New Forest Restaurant: informal, local ingredients, contemporary British cuisine. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £16.
