On tranquil Sheep Street, The Bay Tree is a short walk from the enticing shops and galleries of Burford's high street. The Cotswold Wildlife Park is also close by and worth a visit, with or without young children in tow.

The nearest stations are at Charlbury and Kingham.

By car: around 2 hours from London and 1 hour 15 minutes from Bristol. Free on-site parking available.

By train: London Paddington to Kingham takes 1 hour 30 minutes, after which, a taxi takes 15 minutes. Book trains to Kingham.

There's a laid-back atmosphere, whether you're lounging in the library with a crackling fire in winter, or lazing in a deck chair on the expansive lawns in summer. Throughout the ground floor, you'll find stylish furnishings and lots of cosy corners.

We appreciated the little touches, like ordering a coffee that came with a little biscuit, or sitting by the fire in the library, which was gently stoked by the attentive staff. Facilities include the glorious walled garden with its terrace for al fresco dining, several private dining areas and a large car park.

This quirky old property boasts rooms of all shapes and sizes across the main building, annexe and garden. All are individually furnished in a country-chic style. Some have four-poster beds, while others have roll-top baths. Book a garden room for a Juliet balcony overlooking the lawns.

You can choose to dine informally in the bar, or for something more romantic, book a table in the restaurant. The food is modern British, with an emphasis on local Cotswold ingredients. We recommend the salmon and n'duja fishcakes with rich lobster sauce and fennel and apple salad.

The Restaurant: classic British cuisine, locally sourced ingredients. All-day menu, open daily.

The Bar: cosy armchairs and log fire. Local ciders, ales, bar snacks and nibbles. Open daily from 10am (11am Sun).
