With its Beaux-Arts elegance, the hotel stands out from nearby buildings and originating in 1927, it's a great example of one of the city's early skyscrapers. Designed by renowned architect Emery Roth, there's a warm and exclusive feel. The high-ceilinged lobby boasts columns, marble floors and mirrors with dim lighting.

Service here is friendly and efficient. The bar and restaurant were closed when we stayed. The business and fitness centres are 24-hour, and there's a hair and nail salon, room and laundry services and valet parking.

There are 180 rooms and suites, which are pet-friendly, and range from studios to apartments. All are spacious and bright, with neutral décor and many have views of Manhattan - while some have terraces. White marble bathrooms feature large mirrors, and may have a combi shower/bath.

The Bar and Restaurant were closed during our visit. Staff are happy to recommend dining options and the hotel's neighbourhood guide recommends La Grenouille for French cuisine or Alidoro for casual dining. Rooms and suites have a kitchenette, which includes a sink, fridge, microwave and coffee-maker.
