MORE INFORMATION

Location

Surrounded by hedge-lined fields and copses with nothing to spoil the view, Doxford Hall sits in the middle of a network of country lanes. One of the coast's prettiest beaches, Beadnell Bay, is a ten-minute drive, while Bamburgh beach, beneath its mighty Norman castle, is ten minutes further. The nearest village is Beadnell, a ten-minute drive away on the coast, while Alnwick is 15 minutes to the south.

Two miles to the east of the A1 in mid-Northumberland.

By car: the drive takes 4 hours from Manchester and 6 hours from London. There is free parking at the hotel.

By train: Chathill station is a 5-minute taxi ride away. Trains from London Kings Cross and Manchester, via Newcastle, take around 4 hours 20 mins. Book trains to Chathill.

Style

Interiors maintain a country-house feel with well proportioned rooms, wood panelling, a grand hand-carved staircase, decorative cornicing and light-filled rooms dotted with elegant tables and sofas, all framed by lavishly draped sash windows. The core of the hotel is classic Georgian, though subsequent extensions have carefully matched the style.

Service & Facilities

The grounds include woodland walks and a fun yew maze and for those that are so inclined, you can work out in the gym, take a dip in the pool or relax in the spa with a treatment or in the steam room. There's plenty of space for everyone, including a Morning Room, lounge, library, bar and large paved terrace. The staff are both professional and friendly.

Restaurants & Bars

Dinner is a smart affair, beginning in the bar with canapés before moving to a dining room of starched napery and fresh flowers, where classic dishes with subtle tweaks are served. If you're not up to a fancy fine dining evening, the bar menu has a good selection including baked Camembert, home-made burger and New York pastrami sandwich.

George Runciman Restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes, imaginative British cuisine, dishes include pavé of cod with braised fennel. Open for lunch and dinner. Mains from £18.95.

Bar & Lounge: bar classics including baked camembert, burgers and doorstep sandwiches. Mains from £18.95.
