Wrapped in its own woodland and reached by a single-track road, the hotel feels very secluded and the handful of houses in Eshott village aren't visible from the hotel. The beautiful sweep of Druridge Bay and the jolly seaside town of Amble (with boat trips to see the puffins on Coquet Island) are 15 minutes away, whilst Alnwick castle and garden are around 20 minutes.

By car: around 30 minutes from Newcastle and 2 hours from Edinburgh. Free parking available.
By train: direct trains from Edinburgh (1 hour 15 minutes) and London King's Cross (over 3 hours) to Morpeth. It's a 20-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Morpeth.
With its beautiful symmetry, a wisteria-draped façade and deep sash windows, the house is a model of Georgian perfection. Inside, the well-proportioned public rooms have plasterwork ceilings, panelling, log fires and a careful scattering of paintings and ornaments. The furniture is traditional yet elegant and the colours are light and soft.
There's a tennis court, croquet lawn and wellies to borrow if taking one of the woodland walks. Clay-pigeon shooting can also be arranged. The elegant, fire-warmed lounge is a relaxing space to recline in and there's a terrace for warmer days, plus a clubby-style bar. Staff are largely from the local area and have the famous northeastern warmth.

Rooms are large and some have a gentle theme, such as the Rose Room with its pink chandelier or rich purples and greens in the Peacock Room. They're grandly furnished with antiques; expect a carved French bed and marble-topped washstand or chaise longue. Several rooms are in the lodge-house or converted stables.

Dining is intimate and elegant; the two panelled dining rooms are romantically lit by candles in the evening and bathed in light at breakfast time. Dishes are confidently crafted minus any fussy presentation, think lamb with courgette and red pepper Provençale and salsa verde. Service is friendly and warm and some of the produce comes from their kitchen garden.
The restaurant: locally sourced produce from the Northumbrian coast and countryside as well as the on-site kitchen garden, 2 AA Rosettes. Open daily for dinner 6-8.30pm. Guests are asked to book in advance.
