The nearest town is Bellingham, eight miles away, and it's a half-hour drive from the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle.

By car: under 3 hours from York, 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester and 6 hours 30 minutes from London. Free on-site parking available.

By train: London to Hexham takes around 4 hours; Manchester takes 3 hours 30 minutes - after which, it's a 40-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Hexham.

Style

This is a traditional country inn with low-beamed rooms, exposed stone walls and real fires. Decorative features include copper jugs and horse brasses. As well as the main bar and dining room, there are a couple of cosy snug areas.

Service & Facilities

As it's a pub there aren't too many facilities, but there are three separate cosy bar areas. The pub can arrange bike hire, maps and walking routes can be borrowed and there's a drying room for wet clothes and boots after a day's exploring.

Bedrooms

There are eight bedrooms; some are in converted outbuildings adjoining the pub and have a small courtyard. Rooms are spick and span, in a simple cottage style with plain walls, cream-painted furniture and colourful cushions and curtains. Ensuite bathrooms contain showers only.

Room types: Double, Twin, Family, Garden Cottage

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee-making facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

Restaurants & Bars

Expect home-cooked food, made with flair with ingredients sourced from the county, together with herbs, vegetables and fruit from the inn's kitchen garden. Pub classics such as steaks and pies are on the menu, alongside more unusual dishes like Moroccan baked cod with roast vegetable couscous and slow-roast Northumbrian lamb with rosemary. Save room for dessert - the brioche and marmalade bread-and-butter pudding is deservedly famous.

The Pheasant Inn: traditional country pub, British cuisine, locally-sourced ingredients. All-day menu, open daily lunch and dinner.
