Location
Perched on the Old Steine in central Brighton, the hostel entrance is set back from the road. It's around the corner from the seafront, and a short walk to the Lanes and the buzzy Mesmerist bar; the Royal Pavilion is five minutes away.
The back of the property overlooks the coach station, which can get noisy at night, while a bus stop is a 30-second walk.
By car: around 2 hours from London and Oxford, and 3 hours from Bristol. Paid parking available nearby.
By train: trains from London Victoria and London Bridge take around 1 hour. It's a 7-minute drive (or 15-minute walk) from the station. Book trains to Brighton.
Style
Originally opened in 1819 as the Royal York hotel in 1819, the rooms are simple and straightforward, clean and uncluttered. There's still some Regency flair in the public areas, like huge floor-to-ceiling bay windows, grand chandeliers and arched doorways.
Service & Facilities
Staff are young and friendly, and happy to make recommendations for fun places to go. The ground floor café-bar serves good value meals and cheap beer. There's also a games area with a ping pong table and foosball. The communal kitchen has 24-hour access, while the bar is open until 2am.

Rooms and dorms have simple, neutral décor. There aren't too many facilities - no air conditioning or double glazing, so it can get hot and noisy. Bathrooms in the private rooms can be spacious, and some even have baths, as well as complimentary toothbrushes, ear plugs and shaving kits.

Restaurants & Bars
The ground floor Brighton Grind café bar is open all day for food and until 2am for drinks at the weekend, serving typical pub grub with burgers, sandwiches and nachos all on offer. Snacks and soft drinks are available 24/7. We loved the cheap beer; the café-bar prices are YHA standard so it was less than £4 a pint. Breakfast was £9.95.
Café-bar: unlimited breakfast served daily (continental option available) from 7:30am. Snack bar menu, pizzas and nachos. Food served between 11am-8:30pm
